AMI is the biggest manufactures of BIOS firmware for major
motherboard manufactures.
Founded by two Indians who were
social entrepreneurs. AMI started off to be manufacturer of complete
motherboards, but couldn’t survive the competition from the original
Taiwan-based manufactures; and so made BIOS firmware their riche market AMIBIOS
one of the company’s product is the most used BIOS firmware in motherboards. Initially,
the firmware had wired problem; it would play the Happy Birth Day tune each
time a PC booted up. This was solved with a organ free firm-ware upgrade. In
1994, AMI released an update for AMIBIOS called AMI Win BIOS. It had a
graphical user interface setup screen that resembled Windows; it receive mixed
response from its users due to the novely of the concept.
AMI developed AMI Diag, a PC
diagnostic utility sold only to original equipment manufactures (OEMs) to help
them spot problems while booting.
AMI later diversified into the
domain of mobile applications, online data storage (through “Star Trands”) and
remote management (“Mega Rac”) but BIOS firmware remains its primary product
range.
